For 45 years, America was locked in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and fear of global nuclear annihilation was constant. The end of the Cold War in 1991 was supposed to usher in a new era of peace and cooperation, but it didn’t last. Tensions between the U.S. and Russia have been simmering for years. And now, the conflict in Ukraine has pushed the relationship to the brink of full-blown crisis. VICE Founder Shane Smith met Kremlin officials and American leaders to figure out what’s really driving the new standoff between the powers, while correspondent Simon Ostrovsky reported from the front lines of the bloody war in Eastern Ukraine.

With grim inevitability, the story returns to Eastern Europe in 1940 - where the genocidal mechanisms of the 'final solution' were beginning to grind the shtetl world into dust and ash.

Founded in 1917, Cheka was the predecessor organization of the KGB. Set up as a 'temporary' measure by Lenin, unknown number of Soviet citizens would die at the hands of the secret services as internal dissents in the 1920s. An inglorious chapter is the "Great Terror" phase, when millions of Soviet citizens were convicted and executed in mock trials under Stalin's rule in the 1930s. Outside the Soviet Union, during the WWII they were busy infiltrating German High Command, British Intelligence and America's Manhattan Project. The Cold War had begun in earnest.

Through decisive battles, world-changing leaders such as Winston Churchill, Franklin D. The first three episodes plunge directly into the war’s explosive beginnings. In September 1939, Germany invades Poland after a secret pact between Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin clears the path for aggression, setting Europe on fire once again. As Nazi forces crush the Netherlands and Belgium and drive west, Churchill prepares Britain for an air assault while Roosevelt races to turn American industry into a weapon of survival. The story then moves to Operation Barbarossa, Hitler’s colossal surprise invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the largest and most costly land offensive ever launched, where ambition, brutality, and resistance collide on an unimaginable scale.

In episodes 9 and 10 of this series, the war moves from the secrecy of codebreaking rooms to one of the most brutal battlefields in history. Far from the front lines, in the quiet English countryside, a hidden struggle unfolds at Bletchley Park, where brilliant mathematicians, linguists and intelligence officers race to crack Germany’s Enigma code. Every intercepted message could save ships, reveal enemy plans and alter the fate of entire campaigns, turning silence, patience and genius into weapons as powerful as tanks or bombers.
The story then shifts to the Eastern Front, where Hitler launches Operation Blue in a desperate drive toward the Soviet oil fields and the city of Stalingrad. What begins as a strategic offensive becomes a nightmare of street-by-street combat, starvation, freezing conditions and unimaginable sacrifice. As German forces are pulled deeper into the ruins and Soviet resistance hardens, Stalingrad becomes more than a battle for a city; it becomes a turning point in World War II, where ambition, endurance and catastrophe collide on a scale that changed the course of the war.
